NCCL: Risk, reward and faith: an introduction to Pascal’s Wager

July 2, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

If you answer the latter, then substitute ‘Father Christmas’ for ‘God’ in both questions and try again.  If you answer the former, then what value does faith have? In this seminar, we’ll investigate this little conundrum with the help of Blaise Pascal, a brilliant 17th-century French mathematician, philosopher and theologian with an interest in games of chance.  Pascal argued that a rational risk-taker would bet on God’s existence and conduct his or her life accordingly.  We’ll ask whether or not this makes any sense — and if it does, what it could possibly mean both for those with faith and those without.

This session is led by Dr Anthony Speca for Norwich Centre for Christian Learning, in Norwich Cathedral Library.
