Coronation Cream Tea Challenge!

May 8, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Swaffham is aiming to celebrate the King’s Coronation in record breaking style by hosting the world’s largest Cream Tea party. This FREE event, set to be held in Swaffham town centre next to the iconic Buttercross building.

The current world record for people attending a Cream Tea party stands at 1088 people, with organisers hoping to smash this number and put Swaffham in the record books. The town has a long history of bringing people together over a meal to celebrate historic events. In the 18th and 19th centuries Swaffham residents celebrated royal coronations and marriages with public gatherings in the marketplace. Attendees would enjoy a roast beef and plum pudding dinner, washed down with copious amounts of local ales. At Queen Victoria’s coronation in 1838 over 2000 people, almost the whole town population at the time, came together for a communal meal. In more recent times, young and old residents enjoyed a free tea party to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953.

This free event is being supported by Historic England, as part of their commitment towards the Swaffham High Street Heritage Action Zone Initiative, local Swaffham businesses and community groups. Swaffham Cultural Consortium is organising the event and asks for volunteers to come forward to help bake scones, set up and take down tables, and steward the event on Monday 8 May. A shuttle bus service will operate from the edges of town (more details on the website).

Sue Gattuso, Chair of Swaffham Cultural Consortium commented: “We want as many people across Norfolk to visit Swaffham and take part in our record breaking Cream Tea party on 8 May. This free event will be a truly amazing, communal experience packed with fun, laughter and wonderful Swaffham scones!”

For further details about how you take part in the free Cream tea just visit, whilst potential volunteers should contact Sue Gattuso directly on
